ASISU refuses to fund student newspaper

The ASISU Senate refused to approve a Contingency Fund request of $5,000 to aid the Bengal Newspaper in its continued operation in what appeared to many as a politically and personally motivated vote during their meeting Monday night. This comes following a $4,921 approval to fund the Bengal Dancer's purchase of championship rings, and a $5,000 request by the Danson dance program to fund travel expenses to New York, which was approved immediately after.

The last issue of the Bengal for this school session is upon us, and it has been a remarkable year for me. I can't speak for my staff, but I am assured that we have all learned volumes.

Jon Newlee steps down

Jon Newlee, the winningest coach in Idaho State University women's basketball history, has announced that he is leaving the Bengal program to take the head coaching position at the University of Idaho. He will take over for Mike Divilbiss, who resigned from his position on March 28 with two years left on his contract and a seven-year record with the Vandals of 82-119.

May 10 ISU commencement

A total of 1,670 graduates will receive 1,765 degrees and certificates during ISU's spring commencement ceremonies, which will begin at 10 a.m., May 10, in Holt Arena.

Eighty-nine students will receive multiple certificates and/or degrees.

In addition to the presentation of these degrees and certificates, three distinguished faculty members will be acknowledged, nine alumni will be recognized for their professional achievement and 11 outstanding students will be recognized.

Athletics to drop men's golf

Idaho State University officials, in conjunction with acting Director of Athletics Jeff Tingey, have announced that the sport of men's golf will no longer be sponsored at Idaho State, reducing the number of intercollegiate sports at the university to 15.

Idaho State will now sponsor six sports for men: football, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, cross country and tennis.

Idaho State's volleyball team hosted the ISU Spring Volleyball Tournament at Reed Gym on Saturday, April 19. The Bengals went 3-1, defeating the College of Idaho, Westminster and Northwest Nazarene in their final three matches after dropping their opener to the College of Southern Idaho.

Matt Stucki and the future of ISU basketball

He pulls up behind the arc, halting momentarily to nod at fellow 3-point assassin Austin Kilpatrick, who was set in the defense. Scholarship

Autumn Gomez is the recipient of the 2008 Fulbright Scholarship. She is the fourth ISU student to receive the Fulbright Scholarship in recent years. Gomez is a senior majoring in Spanish and International Studies. The Fulbright Scholarship will enable her to work as an English teaching assistant in the secondary schools of the Principality of Andorra.

Eyes toward revitalization

Ofelia Zepeda, Ph.D., began the special anthropology colloquium on Wednesday, April 9, by speaking her native language, Tohono O'odham, and translating.

Tohono O'odham is native to southern Arizona, and as with many Native American languages, Tohono O'odham began and remains an oral language at heart.

Relay for Life to fight cancer

Walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

Teams will gather for an overnight relay against cancer. Relay For Life is a family-oriented team event where participants walk relay-style around the track and take part in fun activities off the track.
