The Idaho State women's basketball team struggled on both sides of the court Saturday as the Weber State Wildcats defeated the Bengals 82-71 at Reed Gym.
"We need to play for 40 minutes," said Bengal post Chelsey Chambers. "We go on a roll then we shut down for a little bit. That's why we've lost games in the past and that's why we lost tonight.'
The Bengals started off hot keeping the score close until eight minutes into the game when a series of offensive miscues allowed the Wildcats to pull ahead to a 29-18 lead. Idaho State fought back but was never able to cut the lead below seven.
Defensively ISU had its hands full trying to contain Weber State's standout senior Julie Gjertsen. The Bengals ran a help defense trying to double team Gjertsen opening up the low post for Wildcat forward Becky O'Niel who led all scorers with 29 points.
"Gjertsen does a lot for them," Idaho State Sophomore Molly Hays said. "When she's not shooting she's passing."
Containing the Wildcat's outside shooting proved to be quite the task Saturday as the Weber State shot 53 percent in the first half forcing ISU to run its help defense to slow down Weber's guards.
"We just couldn't seem to figure things out defensively," Hays said. "It's doing the little things defensively and working as a team. Tonight we just had too many breakdowns,"
"We knew what they were going to run," said Coach Jon Newlee. "They've been doing the same thing for ten years.'
Despite the setback the Bengals are a young team with a lot to look forward to as they finish out their conference schedule.
"We're a work in progress because of the youth and injuries," Newlee said. "We will be in the Big Sky tournament and hopefully by then we'll have our stuff together."
