POCATELLO, ID - CW HOG, Idaho State University's Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group, will hold its annual ski-a-thon to benefit handicapped skiers on Feb. 12 at Pebble Creek Ski Area.

Registration will take place from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in the lodge. Revenue from the event supports the Pocatello Adaptive Ski School, which provides alpine ski instruction and recreational skiing opportunities for skiers with disabilities.

Last year the event raised $6,000, and organizers hope to top that amount this year, said Bob Ellis, CW HOG's new recreation coordinator.

All of the ski-a-thon's growing revenue supports adaptive skiing, primarily equipment purchase.

"One hundred percent of the money we collect is used to support disabled skiers in the area," Ellis said. "Not many fund-raisers give all the money raised to the area where it was designed to go."

He added that volunteers are the backbone of the adaptive ski school, as they are with other CW HOG programs.

Ski-a-thon participants who have not done so can pick up their packets at the CW HOG office in the Pond Student Union Building. Those collecting $150 or more in pledges can ski free, will receive a Pocatello Adaptive Ski School sweatshirt and win prizes. Those who pledge $50 or more will have an opportunity to win a one-night stay at the Lava Hot Springs Inn.

Pledge money collected must be turned in by Feb. 22. An awards party will be held at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in the Christensen Courts Community Room, 711 N. Sixth Ave., Pocatello.

Top pledge gatherers will choose from the following grand prizes: a gift certificate from Barrie's Ski and Sports, equipment from Instant Replay, a Pebble Creek Ski Area 2005-06 season ski pass, a gift certificate from Scott's Ski and Sports, a prize from Pocatello Electric, and a one-year membership at Fitness, Inc.

Door prizes at the event will include everything from coffee cards and free lunches to massages and gift certificates.
