This week's Bengal scholar athlete recipient Christa Brossman's philosophy in life can be described in one phrase: hard work. This tenacious grad student makes balancing a college sports career and academics look easy. Brossman currently plays basketball for ISU while attending graduate school for a degree in athletic administration.

After graduating high school with a 3.8 GPA, the Pullman, Washington native went on to receive her bachelor's degree in mass communications with an emphasis in television and a graduating GPA of 3.74.

"I got my major in TV and I really wanted to be a sports broadcaster so I worked with Dave Reichelt and Channel 6 News," tells Brossman. "I just really liked the media and that avenue." Brossman is also interested in a possible career in coaching as well.

Participation in sports while simultaneously receiving exemplary grades is a task achieved by few, but Brossman appears to have what is takes to succeed. Last semester she had 2 internships while taking 15 credits. She attributes a majority of her success to her super-organized type A personality and speaking with her professors ahead of time to let them know when she has to miss class for a game. She also manages to turn her assignments in before leaving to go on the road.

"Just make sure you stay ahead of the game and don't get too far behind," says Brossman.

Most students would look at Brossman's GPA and beg to know her study habits. While she has shown her ability to work well with others through basketball, this team player is very individually motivated and finds it easier to study on her own.

"I am not smart," Brossman modestly says. "I have gotten to where I am because I am a hard worker. My work ethic has gotten me to where I have been."

While Brossman has been naturally blessed with the ability to succeed in academics, sports has held the large influence for the shooting guard on the women's basketball team. If given the choice between sports and academics Brossman claims she would choose sports. "I love sports," Brossman says. "That is one reason why I chose to major in something that I could do and still be involved with athletics when I was done."

Whether she is striving with her team toward a Big Sky title or working toward a master's degree, Brossman's dedicated nature will carry her far in life.
