Wind Ensemble, Concert Band spring performance set March 4

The Idaho State University Wind Ensemble and Concert Band will perform their spring-semester programs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 4, in Goranson Hall, located on the lower level of the ISU Fine Arts Building.

The Concert Band will begin the performance with the Italian march "The Florentiner," by Julius Fucik. Following the march, the band will perform "Simple Gifts" by Frank Ticheli. It is a four-movement work with each movement based on a different Shaker song, among them the popular hymn "Simple Gifts." The Concert Band will also perform "Daydream" by Timothy Mahr, and "Alligator Alley" by Michael Daugherty.

The Wind Ensemble portion of the concert will be comprised entirely of works originally written for other musical mediums. "The Slavonic Dances: A Symphonic Suite" is closely based upon the "Slavonic Dances, op. 46" by the Romantic-era composer Antonin Dvorak, and was transcribed for band by Jim Curnow. This same arrangement of Dvorak's music was performed by the U.S. Marine Band on their recent visit to Pocatello.

"Festive Overture, op. 96," by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, is another work originally written for orchestra that was later transcribed for band. "Festive Overture" will be the first work the Wind Ensemble will perform April 1 at the grand opening for the Joseph C. and Cheryl H. Jensen Grand Concert Hall in the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center. The Wind Ensemble will also perform "O Magnum Mysterium" by American composer Morten Lauridsen. Originally for choir, "O Magnum Mysterium" is notable for its simple lyricism combined with a 20th-century approach to harmony.

The featured guest soloist for the concert is Dr. Thom Hasenpflug, ISU assistant professor of percussion. He will perform the "Concertino for Marimba" by Niel DePonte. Admission to the concert is $5 general, $3 ISU faculty and staff, ISU students free, and precollege students $2. Children under the age of 6 will not be admitted.
