The March 28 ASISU senate meeting represented the University in front of a full gallery of club and student organization members, senator elects and administrators.
ASISU president, Terry Fredrickson, first announced a concert by bands Cake and Gomez coming to ISU on May 2. Fredrickson then, with the assistance and support of Dean Covey, also cleared up rumors about the rodeo club and the building of the new arena. Dana Olson, director of the Outdoor Program, gave comment on the project stating that it will be used for more than just rodeo purposes. The Outdoor Program and CW Hog foundation will also be using the facility as well as the medical center. The senators gave a more positive opinion on the project after receiving a letter from the ISU physical plant director, Darrell Buffaloe, who cleared up any misconceptions in relation to the project's funding and progression.
Fredrickson continued his president's report by emphasizing the need for the senators to investigate new proposals in setting tuition for the coming year. Fredrickson said there will be a proposal reproached from last year for making a $0.50 raise in full-time student tuition and a $1 increase for part-time students.
Under announcements and correspondents, president elect, Matt Hobson, asked for the approval of three new ASISU chairmen. Jeff Brown, a "fifth year" senior with experience on the program board as the concert chair, was appointed as the program board chairman. Kimi Taylor, serving on this year's finance committee, was appointed as the finance committee chairman. Lastly, Kyle Tarbet was appointed as the election board chairman. All three of these appointments were approved unanimously by the student senate.
The senate was then approached by Dan Smith, the vice president of the Portneuf Greenway Foundation. This foundation actively promotes and establishes non-motorized vehicle trails in areas ranging from the Portneuf Gap to the Simplot Plant. Smith came to the senate with a request for support and funding assistance in a new trail project that will extend from the Davis Field to the Student Union Building. Smith said the estimated cost of the project is approximated at $15,000 to $20,000. With the Greenway foundation already dedicating $5,000, they hope to receive some assistance from the University as well as from other community organizations. With further discussion and some reluctance from some senators due to the tight supplemental budget, the senate voted in support of the project and to "earmark" one tenth of what the university spends toward the project, not exceeding $2,000, within the revenue and transfer budget.
