POCATELLO, ID - Idaho State University administrator's laid out a comprehensive plan for developing an athletic facility master plan to an assembled group of media and select boosters on Wednesday morning, a plan that involves the hiring of consultants to recognize core issues with facilities, as well as the initial steps towards a major capital campaign for athletic facilities.
The meeting was held in Bennion Room in Holt Arena, and it was mediated by Paul A. Bubb, Director of Athletics. Among the speakers were university President Dr. Richard Bowen, Kent Tingey, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, and Darrell Buffaloe, Director of the Physical Plant at Idaho State.
"Starting the development of an Athletic Facility Master Plan for the university was something that I wanted to accomplish within my first 90 days as Athletic Director," said Bubb. "Dr. Bowen has been very supportive and receptive of this concept, and I'm grateful for his backing and his commitment to this project."
Said Dr. Bowen, "Our athletic administration has never been stronger. Timing is very important, and I think the timing is right for this project."
Bubb announced that an "Athletic Facilities Master Plan Group" (AFMPG) has been put together, with himself serving as the chair, to help implement a timeline and to work with a yet to be named consulting firm on facility issues. On the committee is Scott Campbell of Campus Planning, who will serve as facilitator; Scott Benson, ISU's Faculty Athletic Representative; Phil Blick, Assistant Vice President of Financial Services; George Casper, who is the ISU Director of Events and who oversees both Holt Arena and the L.E. Stephens Performing Arts Center; Doug Milder, Director of Campus Recreation; Dr. M.R. Mickelsen and Mark Nye as community representatives; and Dr. Kent Tingey of University Advancement. Bubb also noted that one additional community member and one member from the area of ISU student affairs will be on the committee as well.
Darrell Buffaloe discussed the four-phase plan for the Facility Master Plan. The first two phases, having the Athletic Facility Master Plan recognized by the university's senior administration and the establishment of an interactive group (the AFMPG) have already been established. Buffaloe stated the third phase is to present a planning concept to the State Board of Education as well as to the Division of Public Works and the Permanent Building Fund Advisory Council." The fourth phase is the implementation of the plan.
Dr. Kent Tingey touched on the fund-raising possibilities of a major capital campaign for athletics, noting that with the university having wrapped up the $152.5 millionCentennial Capital Campaign, the timing is right for the next major fund-raising project for the advancement office. Tingey noted, "While there is some crossover, most of the people who want to donate to athletics are not the same people who donate to a performing arts center."
