Beaty is employed at Public Safety and is the tenth student to receive the Student Employee of the Year Award at ISU. Beaty will receive a $2,000 scholarship for the 2005-2006 school year provided by the Scholarship Office. A traveling plaque will also be awarded to Beaty by the Dean of Student, Dean Covey.
Beaty has been a dispatcher at Public Safety since August of 2003, works thirty hours a week, and maintains a 3.11 GPA. As a dispatcher, Beaty is the first contact a caller has in need of assistance due to injury or a crime. Terrillee Hancock, operations manager at Public Safety, nominated Beaty for her work effort and the manner in which she carries out her job.
"Jennifer has handled many calls and always uses excellent judgment and decision making in the course of her duties," Hancock said.
Hancock said Beaty's position is a "very technical position for a student to hold." The dispatcher is known as the "life line" in the enforcement agency.
"Dispatchers must be knowledgeable, alert, and capable of keeping calm in an emergency situation," Hancock said of Beaty in her nomination letter. "Jennifer displays all of these qualities and is held in high regard by the officers who work with her."
In a closing statement in the nomination letter, Hancock praised Beaty for her personality and hard work on the job.
"We who work with her know that she is much more than ordinary. She is an exceptional young woman and an excellent employee," Hancock wrote. "Jennifer knows the importance of her position and the impact her position has on the safety of the campus community. The way she handles the responsibilities of her position is very important to the campus and the campus can depend on her."
Student employee nominees are judged based on reliability, quality of work, initiative, disposition/attitude, longevity, adaptability and uniqueness of contribution. The panel of judges choosing the recipient is made up of two committee staff members, one faculty member, the former Student Employee Award recipient, and chairman, Dr. James Yizar.
Jan McDougall, of student employment, introduced the award to ISU and believes it is a way for departments to honor and thank their student employees.
Other students that received awards were Dan Donague from the economics department (received the Jim and Arlene Lupher scholarship of about $270), and Jamie Davis from education/ICEE was awarded a $50 gift certificate and general parking pass. Matthew Barrett and Sandra Cummings were awarded a $25 gift certificate from the ISU Federal Credit Union.
