With the compensation of pizza and conversation, mass communications students are playing their role in making the decision of the next television faculty member coming to ISU.

With the responsibility of production and editing courses, the television faculty position was previously held by Mike Trinklein and currently Tom Hallaq, who has played his part by introducing his students to the news world at the KPVI studio in their own show. With the Fall 2005 semester quickly approaching, Bill Loving, mass communications chair, says they are hoping to make a decision soon. Loving is also looking forward to the two 3-chip broadcast quality television cameras in addition to the new faculty member for the upcoming academic year.

With these additions, the program is hoping to advance the television classes for students. Through luncheons with the candidates, the students have had the opportunity to meet each candidate and voice their opinions.

"We take seriously the comments students make after these lunch meetings," Loving said. "The meetings also give candidates some time with the students so they can see what teaching will be like."

Loving said the students' reactions to the candidates are a determinant taken seriously by the program.

"I can tell you that our students are a strong point for the candidates," Loving said. "[The candidates] consistently remark that the students are bright and committed to their educations."

Elaine Medel, the mass communications secretary who is consistently inviting students to the luncheons, feels these occasions give students a more personal look at the candidates.

"The luncheons are particularly effective in that there are no faculty people, just students and the candidate in a setting where questions can be asked of each other in a comfortable situation," Medel said. "It seems to be a forum that the students and the candidates enjoy, free pizza aside."

The candidates also give lectures to the students to provide the students and faculty a view of their teaching styles and technique.
