Both quarterbacks, Matt Hagler and Luke Sniewski shined early, with Hagler leading the Bengals down in to field goal range on the opening drive, and Sniewski leading a touchdown drive, highlighted by a 66-yard pass to Hunter Rodriguez on a broken play. Hagler finished the day 6-for-14 for 62 yards, including a second half touchdown strike to Akilah Lacey of 29 yards on a play where he picked up the blitz, and audibled at the line, showing the sophomore's continued growth.
In the second half of the scrimmage however, the defense took over, limiting the Bengals to 0-for-6 in the red zone, and just 1-for-3 in goalline situations, the one a 5-yard scamper by Josh Barnett, who rushed for 55 yards on 13 carries after missing the first scrimmage. Barnett, who became the starter in game five last year, looked solid in his first extended action.
Jeff Charleston, the Western Oregon transfer, continued to impress, recording six tackles, two sacks, deflecting two passes, and forcing a fumble. His sack was one of five and the Bengal defense knocked down six passes on the day. Even walk-on linebacker Brandon McMillin, who is in a battle for the long snapper position, starred with five tackles at middle linebacker.
The Bengals will practice next week on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 3:45 pm before the host their spring game scrimmage on Saturday, April 23 at 1:00 pm at the South Practice Field.
