The semester is winding down as another school year comes to a close, but plans are already being made for Welcome Week, to usher-in the 2005-2006 school year.

Welcome Week 2005 will be the second annual week of events at Idaho State University and will take place Monday, Aug. 22 through Saturday, Aug. 27.

"It certainly is an event to welcome everyone, renew acquaintances and to make new ones," said Bonnie Frantz, interim director of the Student Activities Center.

According to Frantz, the goal of the week is to welcome everyone, new and old, to campus and to create opportunities for social interaction among faculty, staff and student through various activities.

"We had noticed that other universities were doing a full week of activities, and it seemed great for them. So we decided to do the same," Frantz said.

Prior to Welcome Week's beginning, ISU offered a day of events the first Wednesday after school started, however, campus groups and departments wanted to offer something more.

"We tried to expand [Welcome Wednesday] to a full week of activities to reach more people," Frantz said. The week also intends to showcase opportunities for student involvement at ISU, provide information, and to make memories.

Though the week is still in the initial planning stages, it has been decided that activities will be held during the day and in the evening. Tentative plans during the day include an ice cream social, a reading project, rock climbing lessons, and an ambassador scavenger hunt.

Following the example from last year, there will be a big white tent set up during the week providing information on opportunities for student involvement and student organizations. The plan ning committee also hopes to invite a band to perform during the day and at a night concert.

One activity Frantz was certain of was the Soap Box Derby workshop during the week- followed by a Soap Box Derby race on Saturday.

In referring to the Soap Box Derby last year, Frantz said, " It was a blast! A lot of teams and organizations entered and were excited about the race."

Frantz even said that for those teams who want to get an early start on their soap box car over the summer, can contact Graham Garner, Director of Alumni Relations.

Other event possibilities include a Bingo night, an evening event sponsored by the Greek houses, a Friday Fest on the Quad after the women's soccer game and a Fun-run Saturday morning. Frantz said students should look for advertisements and a schedule of events the first week of school.

In addition to the Student Leadership and Involvement Center's efforts, the Marching Band, Wellnes Center, Athletics, University Relations, Housing, other Student Union Departments, the Program Board and the Greek system have also been asked to help plan the week and participate in the events.

Any suggestions for this week of celebration may be submitted to representatives of participating groups, to the Student Leadership Involvement Center, or to Bonnie Frantz at 282-7866 or at franbonn@isu.edu.
