Single parent workshop at ISU

For those among us who make the title, "full-time student", seem as benign and laughable as, say, "88' Duck-Hunt-Champ". For the chaps and ladies about who've more upon their hands than X-Box paddles, bar-stamps, or caked spaghettio debris. Yes, for the callused but diligent, the weary but upright, the down-but-not-out, the Single-Parents, a resource has surfaced.

On Wednesday, January 25th, Idaho State University's Center for New Directions will sponsor "Men and Women Parenting Alone: Single Parent Conference." The conference, being held in ISU's Pond Student Union, will offer helpful information, valuable knowledge, diverse resources, and friendly support to single parents in attendance.

There will be eight workshops during the conference, all providing dynamic tools and smarts for shouldering another life, while steadfast through the current of one's own.

Workshops include:

"Breaking the Holland Code". Here, participants will discover their interests by gaining a greater understanding of personal and social interests, and compare these interests to the many occupational academic options available.

"Manage Stress Before it Manages You." We all know that single parents confront countless banana peels along their way; this aptly titled workshop will discuss these unique stressors, as encountered by single parents, and then share on how to manage these parenting potholes.

"Meal Planning for You and the Kids." This session will help the single parent with practical methods for designing and planning meals at home. This includes the progressive stages of planning for a meal with recipes, shopping with a list, and then preparing the healthy meal.

"How to be a Hero" Joseph Campbell, a mythologist, compares the experiences of famous heroes to the challenges encountered by students, employees, and parents. This workshop will teach participants interesting ways to manage stress, challenges and triumphs as they work towards their life goals.

"Legal Issues" Tom Dial, with the law firm Dial, May, and Rammell, provides expertise in family legal issues. He will discuss how to use an attorney wisely and other topics related to the law, including child support.

As if all of these weren't enough, this conference o' plenty still contains three more workshops for your use and enjoyment. Single parents can attend free of charge, and a free lunch will be provided also. Seating is limited.
