At the January 23 ASISU Senate meeting, ASISU President Matt Hobson announced he would be issuing a statement to the State Board of Education indicating the senators' top two choices for ISU's next president. Senators were asked to turn in their votes by Wednesday for whom they thought would the best ISU president for the student body.
"We are looking for the best interest of the students," Hobson said.
Hobson then reported Friday that the overwhelming majority of the votes were in favor of Lemanski with Arthur C. Vailas from the University of Houston coming in second.
"Larry Lemanski is our primary with Vailas our secondary choice," Hobson said. "ASISU fully supports Larry Lemanski as the best candidate for ISU."
ASISU Senator Trevor Jenson said students are in support of Lemanski due to his goal for "transparency in administration."
"He was the only candidate to specifically point it as a problem at ISU that deserved top priority," Jensen said. "He was also the only candidate that offered a specific, bold, and clear vision of where he wanted ISU to go, setting out a plan for increased research and a potential medical school."
Hobson says the Faculty Senate and Classified Employees are also in favor of Lemanski for president. But following a meeting with the presidental search committee, faculty senators confirmed that the Senate favord Vailas and then Lemanski.
"The Faculty Senate, based on input from the faculty, chose to support Dr. Vailas and Lemanski," Senator Karl De Jesus of the Chemistry Department wrote in an email." A majority of senators voted to make Dr. Vailas their first choice."
Faculty Senator and Professor of Dental Hygeine Denise Bowen also expressed support for these two candidates.
"I am most favorably impressed with the last two candidates," Bowen said in an email. "Both of them would provide strong leadership for ISU."
Hobson says he has not heard from some of the other groups on campus such as the vice presidents and the athletic administration. But it will be the views of the other more dominant members of the search committee, specifically community constituents and the two State Board members, that will be the key, says Hobson.
