February is National Heart Month. February 3rd is National Wear Red Day. The Susan C. Anderson Gender Resource Center is encouraging students to participate by wearing "a red dress, a red dress pin, red lipstick…" or to "carry a red handbag. Sport a red tie!" On February 3rd the Anderson Center is also hosting a talk, "Keep Your Heart Healthy" which will be given by Jodi Brown, Heart Health Educator at Portneuf Medical Center, at Noon in the Little Wood River Room. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women. About National Wear Red Day, Anderson Gender Resource Center Director, Rebecca Morrow, said, "We hope that people come out and wear red on Friday to raise awareness for this issue."
The Anderson Center has been a part of our campus since 1997 after the Idaho State University Professional Women asked former President Bowen about creating a center in 1996. According to its website, the Janet C. Anderson Gender Resource Center's mission is "...to increase awareness through its resources and services, educational programming and support of gender-related research." The Anderson Gender Resource Center offers gender-related services, educational programming, support of gender-related research and resources. The center offers a Men Encouraging Non-Violence Group (M.E.N.); Project Hope, a program to offer support to those who are affected by "relationship violence, sexual assault, stalking and other crimes"; and Women's Issues and Sexual Empowerment (W.I.S.E.) whose goal is to help women make better relationship choices. Also offered by the center are educational programming, brown bag lectures, a library full of gender related topics, and the Local Women's History Project. "Men: Take the White Ribbon Pledge" will be held on the 15th of this month. Sponsored by the M.E.N.'s group, the pledge invites men on campus and in the community "to become part of the solution to end violence against women." The Anderson Gender Resource Center will host "The Art of Gender in Everyday Life", on March 30 & 31, 2006. On March 30, 2006, the Center will co-sponsor author Barbara Ehrenreich's visit to ISU.
