Students who go above and beyond their duties as an ISU employee may receive more than just a paycheck this April-they might receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Employers from every department on campus are encouraged to send in their nominations for the student or students in their department that they believe to be outstanding student employees, said Student Employment Coordinator Jan McDougall.

It's all part of the celebration of Student Employee Week, April 9th through the 15th, said McDougall.

Idaho State employs as many as 528 students, said Financial Technician Debbie Bloxham.

Out of these 528, only one will be recognized as the Student Employee of the Year. That individual will also receive a $2,000 scholarship for the 2006 - 2007 academic year.

"I believe ISU is one of the few universities in the west to give a $2000 scholarship to recognize student employees' achievements," said McDougall.

The runner-up will receive the Jim and Arlene Lupher Scholarship, worth $430.

The second runner-up will receive a $50 gift certificate to the ISU Bookstore, as well as a free general parking permit.

The third and fourth runners-up will receive $25 awards from the ISU Federal Credit Union.

A special committee led by Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Dr. James Yizar will be reading every nomination. The committee consists of the last year's winning employee, one member of faculty, and two staff members.

In the case of this scholarship, students are not picked based on financial need, said McDougall, they are picked because they've worked hard.

The committee will be looking for anything from excellence in the workplace, to employees going beyond their duties in their department.

Terrilee Hancock, the Public Safety Operations Manager nominated the winning employee for last year, Jennifer Beaty a Public Safety Dispatcher.

Beaty was nominated for being a good dispatcher, said Hancock. Also, she was a key liaison in assisting the Pocatello Police Department when they averted a potential suicide, saving a student's life.

When the award is given out, the winning student will be treated to a party in their honor, hosted by their department. They will also receive a plaque with their name on it to hang in their department. The student may also have a story about them published in the Idaho State Journal. The Journal recognizes Idaho State's outstanding students.

Winning employees also get the chance to go on to the state and regional level of competition. This competition is hosted by the Western Association of Student Employment Administrators. There, students will be required to write their own essay, also including their employer's winning essay.

Employers on campus are encouraged to nominate their best employee, said McDougall.

"It's all about departments showing appreciation for their employees." McDougall said.
