The month of February is not all about valentines and love. Most people aren't aware that February has a national day set apart to regocnize women's achievements in the sports world.
In 1987, Congress passed National Girls and Women in Sports Day. What's that? It recognizes the progress that both women and girls have made in sports, not to mention the many benefits that sports and fitness can bring.
It was created in honor of Flo Hyman, captain of the 1984 Olympic volleyball team, who displayed great leadership and achievement.
The first week in February has been set aside for the celebration of this day. This year, ISU is hosting the festivities at Reed Gym on February 4. The celebration will include sport and activity clinics for girls grade K-6.
Check in starts at 8:00 a.m. and the activities run from 8:30 am until 11:30 a.m. Registration is on a first come first serve basis, with a limit of 300 girls.
This year's national theme is "Count Me In" and serves to recognize the importance of sports participation amongst women and girls, as well as men and boys. It recognizes the achievements of women in all sports, ranging from archery to wind surfing.
Registration and consent/waiver forms are available at local elementary and middle schools, and the ISU Reed Gym Sport Science and Physical Education Office, and ISU campus recreation at Reed Gym.
