Program Board Movie Coordinator Steven Glenn says the project's first and only bid estimated to be $75,000. Provision of this money will require either reallocating bond funds from somewhere on campus or increasing fees for a capitol budget fee of $4 per student.
Glenn says the Program Board is still awaiting that decision, but actual installation could occur this summer.
"It's probably all up in the air till April," Glenn said. "The Student Union said if students approve a fee increase, it could happen this summer."
The two-year delay has been due to other expenses like air conditioning, dishwashers and the Rendezvous Center taking higher priority, Glenn says. But students could be sitting in new seats as early as the fall semester.
"We could start out a new school year with new theater seats," Glenn said.
Glenn said they attempted to do some fundraising for the project. But as an ASISU organization, fundraising was difficult. In order for ASISU affiliates to raise funds from business and other community donors, the association must go through numerous other levels in ASISU to ensure that no other ASISU group is receiving funds from the same donor.
The theater now contains a mix of four different seat designs. The blue seats were installed in 1979 while the 200 burgundy seats were installed in 2004. These newer seats are in different sizes and actually came from the Physical Science building. This building was supposed to have new seats installed but received the wrong ones. And instead of sending the seats back, they ended up in the theater.
"They ordered the wrong size that wouldn't work for the remodeling expansion," Glenn said. "Instead of going back to surplus, they donated the seats."
