This week Nayland Olsen expressed disappointment that The Bengal may be lowering itself to reporting hearsay and gossip. At The Bengal our goal is to report news related to what goes on around campus, not gossip or hearsay, which is why we try to contact as many sources as possible. At The Bengal, we work hard to inform students and collect the facts. All issues that involve a student, an employee, any ISU property, or funds are ISU issues. For the record, The Bengal does not seek to portray any group or individual on campus negatively. We want as many people to talk to us as possible.

I am going to assume that a great majority of ISU students are like me, are in college to get more information about whatever they are studying, and in the end, have more choices available to them regarding their future. I feel that being informed is imperative to making positive choices.

I was disappointed that I was unable to speak with more people regarding my story this week. I contacted over 40 people for my story and I heard from two Ambassadors and two Supreme Court Justices. The more information people have, the better the discussion can be, and hence the better solutions we will have available to us. I think that ignorance creates the conditions in which abuse flourishes. When people don't want to talk about an issue, it is often easy to assume that someone is trying to cover something up. Not always, but this is an assumption that most people make. Sometimes, in fact, refusing to talk about an issue, does not make it go away, but makes the problem worse. Talking to the press can be scary, and I admire those who were willing to speak with me.
