"My aspirations of political office are new, I see problems and I would like to help find the solutions." wrote Thompson in an email.
An ISU graduate student, Thompson announced last Thursday, February 16th, his candidacy for state legislature. He will be running as a republican for District 30- which includes the University area- for House Seat B.
"We need to have Republican Representatives in a Republican Legislature to get stuff done," Thompson said. "By having representatives from District 30 who are in the minority, our voices are not as loud as they should be. I have the contacts in the State Board of Education and I have the ability to voice the concerns the people of Pocatello have with Education."
Thompson wants to take a proactive approach and work to ensure that tax dollars are used to provide Pocatello's youth with a "great and equal education".
"Pocatello has a youthful quality and there is nothing more important than using that youthful potential to build upon our prominent status within Idaho," Thompson said in his announcment. "I am dedicated to helping this community become the measuring stick by which Southeastern Idaho measures against."
Thompson has experience from being active in student government at Idaho State University, currently serving as a graduate student senator.
Thompson says the contacts he has made within the State Legislature and the State Board of Education will also be an aid to him in a proactive approach for the voters of District 30. Thompson says he is committed to work hard to improve the lives of the people of Pocatello.
Thompson says he wants to help this area rise to its full potential.
"I see the potential that Pocatello has and I believe there is nothing more important than fulfilling that potential," Thompson said. "I am running because I want to represent the voices that currently are not represented and I believe that the solutions to many of the problems we are facing in Bannock County can be solved through having new, strong leadership."
Thompson is the owner of J & J Electronics. Thompson will graduate with a Master's Degree in Public Administration from ISU this year. He received his B.A. from ISU in Political Science with a minor in History.
