Pocatello, ID-Under the new direction of head coach Allison Gibson, the Idaho State women's soccer team officially opened spring practice on Monday.
Spring practice will last six weeks and will include exhibition matches against Utah State and Brigham Young, followed by the annual alumni game.
The spring roster includes 18 returnees from the 2005 season, including eight freshmen, six sophomores, and four juniors. Among those returning to spring practice are 2005 All-Big Sky honorees Jennifer Loo, Chantal Kim, and Kilee Quigley.
"It was exciting to finally get out with the team and work," Gibson said about her first practice with the team. "No quite knowing what to expect, I was pleased with our player's passion and competitiveness for the game. I believe that we will be able to build on those tools, and take our game to the next level."
Idaho State returns to the field after going 4-12-1 in 2005, including a 1-4-1 Big Sky mark. Gibson takes over head coaching duties after a successful five-year career as an assistant coach at the University of San Francisco. After winning back-to-back-to-back Big Sky titles, ISU failed to qualify for the league tournament the past two seasons, something that Gibson says will be a top priority of the 2006 squad.
"Our goal is to bring back ISU to the level and caliber of soccer that is started here, and I think without a doubt that's a realistic goal of ours.
As a coach, my goal right now is to fully assess the team both individually and collectively. Right away, I have to get the team's trust, and get them to trust the system that I put in place."
The Bengals are scheduled to play four spring exhibition games, beginning March 4 at Utah State. ISU will also travel to play Brigham Young on April
8. The team will host two games, including Utah State on April 14, and the Boise Capitals on April 15. The date of the annual Idaho State alumni game will be announced at a later date.
Idaho State will open the 2006 season on Aug. 19 at Brigham Young.
