Letter to the Editor : Does Linda Barnier want to get rid of the Ambassadors?

Issue date: 3/8/06 Section: Opinion
It was impressive…

Bill Clinton or Richard Nixon have nothing on Linda Barnier, the director of enrollment planning who holds an alleged $27,000 (which is a rather subjective amount) in funding against the ISU Ambassadors like a gun.  Last night I was thoroughly impressed as she dodged, tiptoed, and skillfully evaded a point-blank question that has been pressing, dividing, and threatening the very existence of the ISU Ambassadors for the past month or so.

It's a simple question, and it was asked at least three times, bluntly, and received no answer.   The question: what will happen to the Ambassador's Enrollment Planning funding and ties should they conform to ASISU standards.

Their decision is tearing this group apart, and they are being forced to make an unfair, uninformed decision because Linda Barnier and the rest of Enrollment Planning refuse to give them any answers at all.  The only thing that the Ambassadors are going off of is that they have in the past been threatened that (and this is credible via several of those who have served on the governing board in the past) they will lose Enrollment planning ties and funding in the event of the proposed charter change conditions.  However, now E.P. will neither confirm, nor refute these past claims, and the Ambassadors are left hanging… the lack of cooperation and the forsaking by enrollment planning allows them with only a shot in the dark as to whether they give up advisor votes and run the risk of losing their identity, or if they should take the other route, and relinquish their status as a student organization.   Both have rather high opportunity costs.

In the past month or so, I have seen this poor organization tread this tightrope between ASISU, and Enrollment Planning.  I have seen Ambassadors quit, friendships lost, and meeting after meeting turn to shouting… and yet Enrollment planning stands silent, leaving them to their confusion, and fear.  What a terrible thing to do to such an incredible organization full of such bright, awesome individuals.  Linda and the rest of her group ought to thank the /heavens for even an opportunity to interact and support such a clan.  It is untellable how much they have done for her, and this University and they have never asked for anything.
