On March 5, 1998, after 12 seasons as the top assistant at Stanford University, Doug Oliver was named the 19th head coach in ISU men's basketball history. In his final season at Stanford University, he helped the Cardinals advance to the Final Four and finish with an impressive 30-5 record.
During his first year with the Bengals, Oliver took an undermanned squad and doubled their conference win total from the previous season.
In a press conference back on January 17 coach Doug Oliver expressed the following,
"After 32 years of coaching at all levels, there's a time that you just feel it. I don't know if I'm done coaching. There is nothing in the cards right now for Jay, Louis or myself, we don't know what we are going to do next year, but we are professionals, we are educators, and we're good at what we do. The one thing it hasn't done is translate into enough wins."
With a record of 88-134 in his eight seasons, Oliver is fifth in career wins at ISU. Under his direction, the Bengals have finished third or higher in the Big Sky Conference three of the last five seasons.
He coached the Bengals to the 1000th win in school history with a 108-85 win over Montana-Western.
In five of the last six years he has been named by College Hoops Insider to their "Runway to the Fashion Four" as one of the best-dressed coaches in America. He is the 19th head coach in ISU history.
In the same press conference, Athletic Director Paul Bubb spoke about the way Oliver has led the program over the last eight seasons.
"I just want to reiterate that Doug Oliver has coached this team with class and dignity, and those are the things I was told before I ever got here to Idaho State. He has recruited good student-athletes, and he has run his program in a first-class manner."
"This program is in good shape. There is a strong nucleus of players that are good Big Sky players, and maybe a need for two or three recruits to come in and compliment this group."
To players like senior guard David Schroeder, Oliver was more than just a coach.
"He was like a parent for the last 5 years of my life. The other coaches are like a second family as well. He took good care of his players both on and off the court. He gave the best for us. He helped me grow a lot as a player. We are the reason he came to Idaho State."
We asked Dave what he feels like Coach Oliver contributed to ISU and he said, "He brought some great guys to this school. He was a coach that was more concerned with his players' success off the court than on the court. He made it a point to see that his players developed as people and that they prepared for life."
