The plot is about two cowboys, Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are hired in the summer of 1963, by a rancher, to work as sheepherders on Brokeback Mountain in the Wyoming high country. Through time they develop a friendship and after fighting off the malicious cold together, their friendship escalates into an undying 20-year romance.
The co-sponsorship of Brokeback Mountain is between Bengal Theater and the Janet C. Anderson Resource Center. In conjunction with the movie, a discussion of Annie Proulx's short story that was originally published in The New Yorker in 1997 will be held today, April 5th, at 5:30 PM in the Northfork room of the Student Union Building. The short story discussion will be led by Dr. Cheryl Lyda, who is an associate professor with the College of Technology.
"I hope the students will react to this story in a mature way. I hope that they can see the beauty in this film," Dr. Lyda stated. "I hope that everyone can find something to connect with in this movie, regardless of their orientation. After all, the story is about love, deep down, to its very core."
Winning three Oscars and four Golden Globes, the cast and crew have crafted Annie Proulx's short story into a major motion pictured that pulled in 82 million in the US and 158 million world wide placing it at #84 on the top grossing movies of 2005.
"Brokeback Mountain" is directed by Ang Lee, who also directed the box-office leviathan and revolutionary film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Over the past decade, Lee has directed ten movies, produced seven and wrote the screenplays for five other movies. His career is adorned with seven Oscars wins and seventeen nominations in the Oscars alone. The famous director once said, "Nothing stands still. That's important in my movies. People want to believe in something, want to hang on to something to get security and want to trust each other. But things change. Given enough time, nothing stands still. I think seeking for security and lack of security is another thing in my movies."
The movie stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Ledger starred in other movies such as 10 things I hate about you, the Patriot, and the Brothers Grimm. Gyllenhaal's film appearances are among the recent blockbuster Jarhead, the Day After Tomorrow, and the cult classic Donnie Darko. The movie also highlights Anne Hathaway, who has starred in both Princes Diaries movies and Ella Enchanted, and Michelle Williams, who played the character Jen Lindley on the hit WB TV show Dawson's Creek.
