February 2007 will kick off the season for ISU's brand new Fast-pitch Softball team, and Coach Larry Stocking is excited to be a part of it.
Stocking coached college softball at Ricks College from 1996 until 2001. Hired this year, Stocking has been on the road every weekend, recruiting girls for ISU's new team, and getting the word out that ISU has added a softball program.
"Every weekend I'm on the road talking to recruits, not just for our first year, but for the next. Not only that but I'm trying to let people know that we do have a program," said Stocking.
Between 800 to 1000 letters have already been received by hopeful players from around the country, he said. Although the first pick of players will come from Idaho and its surrounding area, he has gotten letters from as far away as Florida and Hawaii, Stocking said.
Stocking already has a few girls from Boise and North Idaho picked for the team, he said.
"This is an opportunity for these girls to get into the game on a college level," he said.
Unfortunately he cannot take them all, he's looking for the best players for the job, and he's excited with what he has seen, Stocking said.
So far, Stocking has signed nine players for the team, and he's looking at another six. He also wants to take one or two walk-ons before the season starts, he said.
"I want to have 18 girls on the team before the season starts, with one or two walk-ons," he said.
The Softball team will have a tough schedule their first season, he said. There won't be too many home games, but they plan on attending every tournament in the area, including tournaments hosted by Sacramento, BYU, Arizona, and more, Stocking said.
"We will be independent of a conference our first year, but our athletic director is working on a conference for us," he said.
When the team does get into a conference, they will be seeing a lot of action from the bigger teams in the area, Stocking said. These teams are going to be challenging, but he wants to set the team's goal high, said Stocking.
