Jessica Gurney is the subject of this week's Bengal Chat. She is a sophomore and plays middle blocker for the Bengal volleyball team.
Bengal - Where did you come from?
Gurney - I come from Emmett, Idaho.
Bengal - How long have you played volleyball?
Gurney - I've played since seventh grade. My older sister played too.
Bengal - Did you ever think you'd play volleyball in college? Why ISU?
Gurney - No, I was into basketball. I only played because it helped me with basketball. People told me to play because I was tall. As I got older, it was so much fun and I played so much more. In college I was offered scholarships for volleyball and basketball and I had to choose. I liked the coach, staff, and nursing program at ISU, plus I got a good scholarship that helped huge.
Bengal - What are you going to school for?
Gurney - I'm going for nursing.
Bengal - Who is your favorite super-hero/ idol?
Gurney - I like Mighty Mouse.
Bengal - Do you have a favorite pro team?
Gurney - It's got to be the Yankees; I like watching baseball.
Bengal - What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Gurney - It's cookie dough, always.
Bengal - What was your first job? Where?
Gurney - I worked at a lemonade stand in a carnival when I was thirteen. The booth was lemon shaped.
Bengal - What advice would you give a young volleyball player?
Gurney - I would tell them to get a ton of repetitions and work hard in the off-season to be successful. How hard you work in the off-season will determine how good you will be later on.
Bengal - What is something you do that pumps you up before a game?
Gurney - I listen to music like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" because of past experiences and memories.
Bengal - Favorite movie?
Gurney - The little Mermaid. Ariel was my childhood hero and we both have red hair.
Bengal - Do you have any hobbies or other sports you enjoy playing?
