"I thought we had some great highlights today at the net," said ISU head
Coach Mike Welch. "We have been working hard to improve our blocking, and felt we excelled in the blocking skills that we have been working on this past week."
The Bengals dropped their first match of the tournament to in-state rival Boise State, 30-20, 27-30, 19-30, and 9-15. The squad then lost another four set match to future Big Sky opponent Northern Colorado, 26-30, 28-30, 30-25, and 8-15.
"Our wins were limited by our weaker performance with passing and floor defense today," Welch said. "These two areas are usually where this group is most successful, so there is not much concern in the future with it. We look at it as just a blip in our journey."
ISU wrapped up tournament play with a 3-2 win over league foe Weber State 25-30, 22-30, 30-27, 15-8, and 15-12.
"The hard fought win against Weber State was a great way to end the day," Welch said. "In the last two tournaments we have beaten a team that we had lost to the previous week, so that is a good sign in our progress."
Jessica Gurney led the Bengals through three matches with 25 kills on an impressive .400 hitting percentage. Katie Hurst collected 24 kills and Bri Beal added 19 more on the day. Amanda Bevens notched 17 kills with a .552 setting attack percentage.
Idaho State continues spring play on April 22 at the Loyola Marymount spring tournament in Los Angeles, California.
