Pocatello, ID -- Notice was served on the first drive, even without the touchdown. Matt Gutierrez hit six different receivers and led ISU on a precision 69-yard march that served as a sign of things to come, as the offense played extremely well in the spring season's second scrimmage, held on a cool day at the South Practice Field. Gutierrez and two other quarterbacks combined for a 27-for-42 day for 310 yards and five touchdowns, as 12 different receivers hauled in passes.

The Bengals didn't score a touchdown on any of their first seven drives, although Gutierrez's first drive ended on 4th and 1 at the 11. After a pair of three-and-outs under redshirt freshman Luke Butler, Gutz led ISU to the defensive 2-yard line, but Ken Cornist lost the handle diving over the goal line, and Clyde Logan pounced on the ball for a touchback.

However, ISU got a field goal and two touchdowns on three goal line drives before the half, and then the offense really took over. After a quick three and out to open the second half, Butler connected on a perfect bootleg to tight end Luc Martin for a 32-yard score, and Gutierrez followed that up with a perfect scoring strike to Eddie Thompson, capping off back-to-back 65-yard drives.

Gutierrez then came back and hit Jaron Taylor for a 16-yard touchdown, Luke Butler led ISU to a 41-yard Dan Zeidman field goal, and then Gutierrez tossed his fourth scoring pass, threading the needle for a 3-yard strike at the pylon to Akilah Lacey.

The defense did have their moments with five three-and-outs, and forcing three turnovers, as Sterling Mennear joined Logan with a fumble recovery. Also, defensive end Chris Winland picked off a screen pass from Butler, who not only was Winland's teammate at Century High School in Pocatello, both are roommates. Winland raced 58-yards for a defensive score.

But the story was the offensive, particularly Gutierrez and the receiving corps. Matt finished 21-for-29 for 201 yards and four scores. Butler was 3-for-10 for 70 yards and a touchdown and an interception, and Russel Hill impressed all with a perfect 3-for-3 day for 39 yards. Hill's drive ended with first-and-goal at the 2-yard line.

The receivers were solid throughout, with Eddie Thompson leading all with five catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. Along with Thompson, Kenyon Blue, Jaron Taylor, Luc Martin, and Akilah Lacey all caught scores. Brandon Mennear continued the tight end's dominance this spring with four catches for 34 yards, and 5-6 Jaquan Ramsey jitterbugged for 53 yards on his three catches.
