Issue date: 8/30/06 Section: Life
So you've gotten through that first week of school, and now you are in need of something fun to do. But what is there to do off campus? The best way to find out is to catch the bus at the Student Union Building or in front of the Student Health Center and ride through Pocatello for only 30 cents.
Take sometime this weekend and go visit Marshall Public Library for a good book to read before bed or for another research source. Located at 113 S. Garfield, the library is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
If it is the first Friday of the month, take a walk down Main Street in Old Town, with your roommates, significant other, and or family to admire the artwork of local artists. This event is called the Art Walk; it begins at 5 p.m. and goes until 8:30 p.m.
Another event that can be found in Old Town is the Farmers Market, open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Farmers Market is a great place to purchase fresh produce from local farmers and more.
If you have less homework than most students and would like to volunteer, there are many different places in need of your help. One of the organizations is CASA, a group that provides adult advocates for children. To become a CASA volunteer, take the ten-week training course, which starts September 7 at 6 p.m. The entire course is thirty hours long. Along with the course, a background check and finger printing are required. CASA is located at 836 East Center or you can call 232-2272 for additional information.
If you love animals, there is an organization on campus called Fury Friends that works with the animal shelter to help find homes for cats and dogs. To find out more, contact Josh Bell at 339-0190.
The American Red Cross is also seeking volunteers to help out with blood drives and other activities. To volunteer you can pick up an application at 4155 Yellowstone #12816 or call 237-9445.
There is also a place where you can earn some money while helping out children in the community. At the Pocatello Parks and Recreation center department of Team Sports there are openings for coaches and referees. Parks and Recreation also offers team sports for adults, such as: women's volleyball, basketball and soccer and men's basketball and soccer. For more information on these sports call Brian Lowman at 234-6235.
