The summer months offered little vacation for many of ISU's student athletes. The Bengals athletic teams have dedicated this summer to preparing for a successful season.
The football team has finished two of their three pre-season scrimmage games, showing great promise on the offensive side of the ball. As for the Bengal defense, linebacker Pago Togafau was named the Big Sky Conference's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, by Lindy's 2006 College Football Preview.
ISU was predicted to finish fifth in both the Big Sky Conference Coaches Poll, and the Big Sky Conference Media Poll, released at the Big Sky Conference Summer Football Kickoff Meetings. ISU kicks off their 2006 season on September 2 at UNLV.
The men's basketball team will call Holt Arena home during the 2006-07 season, announced ISU Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb. ISU returns to Holt Arena for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
The move is intended create a better collegiate atmosphere with Holt Arena's capacity of 8,000 for men's basketball, compared to just over 3,000 at Reed Gym. Holt Arena also provides more accessible parking, full concessions, and more restroom facilities.
ISU head women's basketball coach Jon Newlee, announced that assistant coach Gavin Petersen has been promoted to associate head coach for the upcoming season.
The Bengals new head soccer coach, Allison Gibson, announced that Hideki Nakada and Lindsay Massengale will join the Bengal staff as assistant coaches for the 2006-07 season. ISU opened the season by putting up a strong fight Friday, against Utah State but fell 1-0. They then picked their first win of the season Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 thrashing of Southern Utah at Davis Field.
ISU's men's cross country team, who placed third at last year's Big Sky Conference Championship, was predicted to finish this year in third place according to this year's Big Sky Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The Bengal women were predicted to place tied for fifth in the women's poll. The Bengal women placed sixth at last year's Big Sky Championships.
