As Homecoming Week approaches, an array of commemorative activities occur on and off campus. Among longstanding traditions are the Homecoming Parade, Homecoming football game, and Homecoming Dance and Royalty Ball. In addition to these on campus pastimes, newer pursuits spring up, with participants aspiring to create new traditions.

One such pursuit is the latest brainchild of the ISU Alumni Association.

In celebration of Homecoming Week and the 100th anniversary of the Alumni Association, the Association is collaborating with Portneuf Valley Brewing to develop a new "Homecoming Beer" exclusive to ISU Homecoming 2006.

"We're very excited about this," said Student Activities Coordinator Jason Schlegel, "This is the first time anything has been brewed specific to any event at ISU."

The beer's name is "Release the Tiger Homecoming Ale" and it will be available starting Monday of Homecoming week. It will be a light "Pale Ale" and those familiar with PVB may find it similar to the popular Bigfoot Ale, though a little lighter, according to PVB owner Penny Pink. "This is one of our lightest beers yet," she says, "so you can drink plenty of it." She then adds jokingly, "In that way, it's perfect for releasing the tiger."

Pink indicates that, at least for now, Release the Tiger will be available for a limited time only. "We're going to make it available and drink it until it's gone, and have fun doing it," she says.

Release The Tiger will be available in kegs, in 64 oz. "Growlers", and on draught at the pub.

Schlegel is among those who hope that this will not be a one-time event. "This is a great way for someone who appreciates good beer to take part in homecoming festivities," he says, adding "Hopefully we can continue this, and have an annual beer of our own, unique to PVB and ISU. It could become a part of local culture and Homecoming tradition itself."

Beer aficionados and Homecoming enthusiasts alike are welcome to stop by PVB at 651 South 1st street and enjoy this experimental brew. The Alumni Association is also looking to make the brew available at other alumni and Homecoming functions, but the details are still in the works. Further details about "Release The Tiger" are available by contacting PVB at 232-1644 or Jason Schlegel at 282-3451.
