The Senate this year is reviving an old tradition, student of the month. In previous years the university always had a student of the month nominated by the student body and elected by the Senate; however, in recent years it has not been publicized, the Senate has not received nominations and consequently has not been able to vote for one.
This year the Senate has been actively trying to bring back this tradition. They have created a committee dedicated to the purpose of reading through the submitted applications and voting on the student of the month. Sarah Bloom is the Chair of this committee which includes a panel of six senators.
The student of the month is voted on at the end of each month. The Senate is looking for students who excel in academics, and other extracurricular activities on campus. The student of the month receives free lunch, and gift certificates. The committee is hoping it will be able to get more donations and be able to offer the student of the month more perks in the future. They are also hoping to be able to get the student a parking space, but with the limited parking on campus it has not happened yet. The Senate is optimistic this will become a major event on campus and gain student participation. The more participation they receive the more benefits they will be able to give.
Anyone interested in nominating someone can pick up application in the Associated Students of ISU (ASISU) office located in the Hypostyle of the Pond Student Union Building.
