Musical heroism or glorified idiocy, you decide

Melinda Christensen

Issue date: 1/31/07 Section: Opinion
Aren't there enough starving musicians in the world? Honestly, musical talent goes unnoticed and unappreciated daily. Skilled people who can make a guitar sing have fulltime jobs and consider their skill little more than a hobby.

Ah, but now we've made the scene just a little more complex and pitiful, thanks to the inception of "Guitar Hero!" Musical talent is now no longer an issue, the issue now is how well can you knock around a piece of plastic that attempts to simulate playing a guitar. While the game may increase your hand-eye coordination, it does little to nothing for helping you learn to play a guitar.

Unfortunately, the game is sweeping the nation like meth and with similar side effects. The more intense players of "Guitar Hero" walk around like zombies with blood shot eyes and a little drool out the corner of their mouths. Worse still, there are actually players of "Guitar Hero' who are so delusional, maybe from lack of sleep or lack of time spent in reality, they think they actually have a skill- Now that's getting out of hand!

Let's check our reality here. Since when did pretending to play a guitar, albeit even well, constitute a skill? Especially in a society where people who can actually play a guitar, who are actually skilled, go unnoticed and unappreciated!

When did a fictional world become more appealing than reality to these individuals? When did pretending to play a guitar become more appealing than learning to play a guitar, and since when does a college support such acts of perverted idiocy? The answer is again unfortunate, since the new "Guitar Hero Contest" on campus at ISU. Now, an entire population of social defectives can come together and depreciate the advancements of society collectively and in a supportive environment that seems to appreciate their lack of real talent and loose grip on reality. To add extra sting to the slap of social injustice, there will also be prizes and rewards given to the "Guitar Hero Contest" 'winners' (or more commonly know to the rest of us as losers). That's right losers, because they've obviously lost touch with reality.
