The new SRC will consist of an elevated track in the Tennis Center and new weight and cardio areas, bringing them out of the basement.

The pool will be repaired and the locker rooms remodeled to deal with various issues there. There will also be an expansion built on to the pool area that will house a vortex and leisure pool.

According to Doug Milder, Director of Campus Recreation, this is a common feature in newer recreation centers on many campuses throughout the US.

There will also be a new entrance/commons area, juice bar, and other amenities for students. Combined with new offices for the Campus Recreation Department, this area will separate the SRC parts of Reed Gym, from the original 1950's Reed Gym.

According to Bill MacLachlan, Assistant Director of Campus Recreation, "Our philosophy is to have Recreation areas available as much as possible so we try not to have a lot of programming. It is important to us that a student be able to come to recreation areas and have them open for them at all times of the day."

There will also be additional multipurpose rooms and other amenities and rooms to support the new additions. These additions are designed to accommodate future expansion, at a reduced cost. If approved by the students and the State Board of Education, construction could start as soon as summer 2007.

"Expansion of the recreational facilities will undoubtedly please those who already come here (Reed Gym) a lot. But Campus Recreation anticipates this expansion will better attract the casual user and the person who might come here, but isn't attracted or comfortable in the current spaces. We want this expansion to provide well lit, comfortable, inviting spaces. Newer, better, and more equipment will attract users to the exercise areas. More opportunities for group exercise will also attract participants," commented MacLachlan.
