The Reed Gym Expansion project has been in the works for over four years. Little was done following the passage of Associated Students of ISU Senate Resolution 387, which approved the 1.56 percent fee increase ($27 per semester), meant for the project, until the fall of 2005. Two former ASISU senators, as witnesses to the initiation of this project, told of their views on what has been accomplished four years later.
Echo Schneider, former Health Professions senator, was one of only five senators to oppose the original resolution to raise fees for the Reed Gym project.
"I voted no essentially on timing; I didn't feel there had been enough student involvement allowed," Schneider said.
Schneider felt at the time that students should have been allowed greater involvement in such an important and expensive decision, especially one that, as she states, "concerns only athletics."
Schneider stated that she was surprised the project is still an issue of debate this long after its original introduction, and felt that the amount of time that has already lapsed is itself a detriment to a current or future resolution of the issue.
"Something approved by 20 senators in 2003 will be viewed very differently by 20 other senators in 2006/2007, and will likely result in a different outcome," Schneider said.
Schneider also expressed disappointment at the fact that the project had not been acted upon until just recently, stating that the administration had failed students by not acting sooner.
"That something voted on and passed by the student government, that had been presented by the administration as essential and such a fantastic idea would be left to sit for several years and not be acted upon is a great disappointment," Schneider said.
The Reed Gym Expansion project was set aside until the issue was brought to the attention of administration officials by a student in 2005. According to Darrell Buffaloe, Director of ISU Physical Facilities in a statement made in a previous Bengal article, the reason for the delay was because of the Rendezvous Center.
