The ISU Office of Human Resources will be naming the Student Employee of the Year during National Student Employee week April 9-13. The winner and runners-up will be presented with the award during a dinner to be held in their honor that week. Nominations for deserving student employees, who must be nominated by faculty or staff, must be submitted by the Feb. 23 deadline for consideration.
"What we're hoping to do by this is show student employees that we value what they do, and recognize the outstanding jobs of those deserving students," said Stacey Giokas, Employment Coordinator in
the Office of Human Resources. "Our intention in giving the award is not to motivate student employees, but to recognize excellence; if it motivates them more, then that's just a nice side effect."
The award consists of a first place winner and three runners-up, with the winner receiving a $2,000 scholarship, second place receiving a $500 scholarship, third place receiving a $50 gift certificate to the campus bookstore, and fourth place receiving a year's general parking pass.
According to Giokas, aside from the monetary prizes for the winner and runners-up, receiving the award itself is an excellent addition to any student employee's résumé.
"We're looking for the student employees' quality of work, their initiative and attitude, and their contributions to their respective departments," said Giokas. "Essentially we're looking for the student employees that have contributed the most to ISU."
To be eligible to receive the award a student employee must have at least a 2.5 GPA, be employed by a department for at least 6 months (or be expected to complete 6 months by May) working 10 or more hours per week, and must be planning to return to ISU as an undergraduate in the Fall 2007 semester.
The selection committee for the award consists of the previous year's award winner, a representative from the Office of Academic Affairs, faculty, and two non-teaching staff members. According to Giokas, the committee is looking to add a student representative, though nothing has been confirmed yet.
The Student Employee of the Year award was created at ISU in 1996, though this is the first year that Giokas will be heading the process of nominations and awarding.
"I'm really excited for a chance to do this," said Giokas. "I'm hoping for a lot of nominations this year, so that students can get the recognition they deserve from faculty and staff for the jobs they do."
The award is a joint venture between the Office of Human Resources, the Career Center, the Scholarship Office, and the Division of Student Affairs.
