Student government issues
Dear Editor,
Recently, ISU has had some difficult times. With declining enrollment and rising fees, education is becoming more and more unaffordable for many on campus. When our administrators saw this trend last year, their first thought seemed to be to raise the salary of the administrators. When everyone from faculty to students to staff raised their voices over this and said no, the administrators went into the mode of defending their decisions instead of listening, and in essence the school president was shown the door.
Now this year, it seems our student government has not learned the lessons of history. Their response to declining enrollment and rising fees was that, of course, we needed a $22 million gym because it would look good and more people would come to ISU because we would have a bigger swimming pool. The biggest shock for many in student government must have been that the students overwhelmingly said no. So instead of realizing their error in thinking and then going for more discussion with broader cross sections of students about this, the senate went forward and passed Reed Gym Option 2 and this time thought the students wouldn't need to vote on their decision. After much pressure from students, the President vetoed this decision.
You can bet that after the upcoming student elections, this issue will be revisited. I feel it's time to kindly show the senate and executives the door either for their ignorance or their arrogance. A few hundred students who hang out together and play government should not be able to determine who runs this university and the decisions that are made.
It's time for ISU students to stand up and vote for new candidates who don't play a part in the current government. Hopefully there are alternatives out there and hopefully our newspaper will make it quite clear who the incumbents are and who their challengers are. Many thanks go to the Bengal for staying on top of the Reed Gym issues and keeping us informed. Now I kindly hope the paper can continue and truly give all of us a voice by educating us as to who is running and what their current status is. With this information, we can make an informed better choice.
