The ISU men's Rugby Club traveled to Boise State to play their first game last weekend. The Bengals were definitely prepared to meet the BSU on Boise's home field. The match ended in a shut out 61-0 in ISU's favor.
Coach Ram Eddings said, "For the first outing of the season we had a good showing. We had a well-split effort from everybody." The team has been practicing since Jan. 9 and the season will run until the end of April. The practice field is located outside on Bartz field and the cold weather has not affected the performance of the Bengals.
There were a few players that stuck out in the game. Mark Roberts from the Bengal team scored off three tries. Also scoring was Jacob Dittmenn and Bobby Early. The coach was impressed by Dittmenn's performance as a new player on the field. Josh Bell also played a good game. "He was an instrumental player in a lot of offensive and defensive plays," declared the coach.
In two weeks the Bengals will start divisional play against Utah State. "It will be a toss up between two other teams, UVSC and Utah State," stated Coach Eddings. "If we play like we have been playing, I am optimistic that we should win conference."
The winner of conference will move on to the Pacific Regional Playoffs. From regionals, the champion will play at the national competition, the elite eight. Two years ago the Bengals advanced to the national level and placed seventh in the nation.
Next year the Rugby team will be able to waive the out-of-state tuition fee for new recruits. A lot of the previous players have been recruited by word mouth and the coach is excited to be able to bring new talent to the playing field.
