Traditionally, run-off elections garner at most half the votes as the regular general elections, but are arguably the most important part in an election. Dr. Lee Krehbiel, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs, said that both the executive and senate seats are extremely important positions.
"The President and Vice President will help set the tone for what student issues are brought before Senate," said Krehbiel, "So if one set of candidates represent issues that you feel are important, than vote for them." Krehbiel went on to talk about his personal experience is seeing members of student government altering the thinking and direction of various university committees. Student voice has a huge impact on setting agendas on campus, as well as deciding the future. Krehbiel said that it is true that a set of senators or executives from the students can have a profound influence on issues at Idaho State University.
Here are the responses to four questions asked to the ASISU Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates:
1. Why should students care about the position you are running for?
Knapp/Olson: "ASISU elections are not a popularity contest. Those students elected should represent each individual enrolled at ISU, and act as the voice to the administration and to the State Board of Education. To a large degree, we determine how student fees are used, which issues take priority, and what changes need to be made. This directly affects each student and we think they should care about the issues that affect them."
Brown/Wheat: "It is important that the President and Vice-President are honest and hard working. They need to believe in the ability of the association to make positive change. They need to believe in a spirit of cooperation and they must be professional and able to work with students and administration. Bryan and I are running because we believe that we posses the qualities that will be needed to change the association from the inside out. We have seen the damage that negativity has caused in the association and we want to see it stop so real change can take place."
