Many ASISU senators felt that they were finally done with the project after the election, which may explain why there was no mention of the election or the results at the senate meeting following the record-setting vote.
However, nothing could be further from the truth. After all that has been done with regards to the Reed Gym project, the results of the last vote put it in almost the exact same position it was in when it was introduced three years ago.
Doug Milder, Director of Campus Recreation, and Bill MacLachlan, Assistant Director of Campus Recreation Facilities, were asked what their thoughts were on the elections results. Milder explained that they don't see the results as so much of a disapproval of the project, but rather about raising fees any more for the project. MacLachlan added, "We would have liked to have seen (the SRC expansion) passed, but it didn't, and it is time to move on."
With regards to where the project will go from here, Milder indicated that they met with the architects, Myers-Anderson, and essentially there are no drawings or blueprints for a $6.5 million dollar project. In fact, Milder indicated that he wasn't sure exactly what the dollar amount is that will be available based on the $27 per semester fee that has been being collected since fall 2004.
Milder did say that they are going to build an expansion that can be added onto later, "…when the climate changes and money seems to be more available for the recreation project."
According to Milder, one of the things that will change as a result of this vote is that no student dollars will be going into existing state buildings. A previous article printed in the ISU Bengal detailing what the Student Recreation Center is and isn't also explained that what the general student body knows as Reed Gym is only one-third a state building. The rest is considered by the state to be a 'student recreation center.' As it stands, no new student fee dollars (i.e. the original $27 a full-time student, per semester) will be spent on the locker rooms or swimming pool. Money to repair the existing pool and upgrade the locker rooms will be solicited from state funds.
