Response from Knapp & Olsen
Dear Editor,
This letter is in response to James Kluza's letter printed in last week's Bengal and addresses both James and the entire student body. James questioned the executive candidates about their intentions to have 'better communication with the students,' an issue that both of us feel very passionate about. Included in our platform is a promise to bring ASISU to the students and help them be both informed and connected. We intend to do this through better advertisement of ASISU's webpage, where links to Bylaws, the Constitution and senate meeting minutes can be found. We would also like to start a tradition of monthly forums to discuss the latest issues. We would like to hold these in populated areas such as the Canoe Room during lunch, College of Tech cafeteria, and the Bennion SUB in Idaho Falls. The Bengal has done a great job of covering ASISU this year and we want that to continue, as well as utilizing Channel 12. What a great idea!
James also mentioned 'its time for you to get out of your offices and seek out the students.' We agree. The position of ASISU President and Vice President was not created for two individuals to bask in glory of a won popularity contest or to surreptitiously savor the perks of a private office and stipend. These positions should be held by individuals who earnestly seek to serve and listen to students. We are committed to doing this through the ways listed above and through personal contact with students. We also feel it's important to respond to e-mails and letters to the editor. Our platform is 'STUDENTS FIRST' because that's where they belong and President and Vice-President are elected to represent them. Thank you James and others for being informed and thank you for voting. If you believe in student voice, please vote KNAPP/OLSON on March 7 and 8.
Sincerely,
Shawnee Knapp and Elizabeth Olson
