Vice President of Academic Affairs, Robert Wharton, and Alpha Kappa Psi President Bobby Goldhahn present Jim Johnston with the Idaho Business Leader of the Year award on Thursday, March 29.

The 2007 Idaho Business Leader of the Year (IBLY) award banquet took place on Thursday, March 29, in the Stephens Performing Arts Center. This year's award recipient was W. James (Jim) Johnston, a local realtor with The Home Specialists.

Johnston was born and raised in Twin Falls, Idaho, where he was the student body president of his high school. He attended college at the University of Idaho, where he studied agriculture. He has been an LDS bishop twice, been stake president, was inducted into the Boy Scouts Hall of Fame, and has consistently been in the top one-half percent of all realtors nationwide for the number of units he's listed and sold each year.

In addition to being a realtor, Johnston is also National Director for a 1.3 million member realtor organization, he's a member of the board of the Boy Scouts of America and the Idaho Civic Symphony, he is a Chief in the Pocatello Chamber of Commerce, and is also on the executive committee of the Idaho Association of Realtors.

During his acceptance speech and a later interview, Johnston thanked his wife, children and brother, as well as everyone else who had a hand in helping with the event. Johnston also plans on continuing to be involved and giving back as much as he can to the community.

The event featured many different speakers, including Dr. Arthur C. Vailas, President of ISU; Bobby Goldhahn, President of the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity; and Dr. Robert Wharton, Vice President of Academic Affairs at ISU.

The IBLY award was started in 1959 by the Delta Upsilon chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi. Since then the award has been used to recognize outstanding Idaho businessmen and women. Former recipients include former Idaho Governor Cecil D. Andrus, J.R. Simplot, and Park Price.

"Jim exemplifies everything this award represents," said Steven Glenn, an ISU senior majoring in marketing and management, and a member of Alpha Kappa Psi for six years.

Glenn is looking forward to going to Washington, D.C. with Alpha Kappa Psi in August for the business fraternity's national Biennial Convention, and also enjoys helping out with any other events the fraternity might be putting on.
