Project Hope, a program of the Janet C. Anderson Gender Resource Center, is ISU's sexual assault-victim resource and advocacy center, and would like to remind the public that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
It is estimated that 1 in 6 women and 1 in 11 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Children can also be victims of this horrible act, with 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys being sexually assaulted before the age of 18.
Sexual assault is any form of non-consensual sexual activity, which encompasses all unwanted sexual acts ranging from sexual harassment to fondling to penetration. Sexual assault occurs when the victim is coerced by the use or threatened use of force; is unable to give consent to the sexual act because of a mental disorder, drugs, alcohol, sleep, or any other impaired state; or is intentionally deceived as to the nature of the act. Persons under the age of 18 are also unable to give consent in Idaho.
If you or someone you know has been the victim of sexual assault, please contact Project Hope at 282-HOPE (4673).
During a crisis, victims may seek assistance from family, friends, co-workers, etc. Project Hope also provides assistance for those helping victims of sexual assault. We encourage that victims referred to Project Hope be accompanied by a trusted individual to our office at the Anderson Center, located in Graveley Hall, room 118. Trained advocates are available in the office daily to meet with family, friends, co-workers, university faculty/staff, and victims.
All referrals and calls are confidential.
