Pocatello, ID --- The first scrimmage of the John Zamberlin era went off without a hitch, and featured plenty to like on both sides of the ball, including offensively where ISU scored five touchdowns in 54 offensive plays, including three through the air.
Two of the touchdowns came off the arm of Russel Hill, who was 7-for-9 for 84 yards, and he threw scoring strikes to Josh Barnett on a 16-yard screen pass, and to Edsel Logan on a 20-yard fade on a red zone series. The other touchdown was by Luke Butler, who was 5-for-11 for 107 yards, completing a 21-yard pass to Pete Richter.
Overall, Bengal quarterbacks were 15-for-30 (Codi Boek was 3-for-11 for 13 yards) for 204 yards and three touchdowns, but the triumvirate of one sophomore and two freshman did not turn the ball over, and all three looked confident and moved the offense well.
Idaho State's depleted defensive line got a boost with some position switches, as Quincy Griffin moved over from tight end, and linebackers Cody Clark and T.J. Bingham all played defensive end, and the extra manpower showed, as the defense racked up six sacks, including 2 ½ by Micah Cloward and 1 ½ by Joel Janke.
Ryan Phipps, Cloward, Bingham, and Joe Strayhand all had four tackles apiece to tie for the team lead. Jonathan Tuua was a force knocking away a pair of passes although there were no turnovers on the day.
ISU spread the wealth among the running backs, with Ken Cornist leading the way with 43 yards on five carries, including a brilliant 20-yard touchdown run. Clint Knickrehm had 35 yards on six carries and touchdown. Jesse Huffine added three yards and Josh Barnett just one in four carries.
The scrimmage got off to a quick start when Butler tossed a laser to JD Ponciano for a 30-yard gain, and Knickrehm reeled off a 39-yard run to make it 1st-and-10 at the 11, but a sack and two incompletions forced a field goal attempt. From there, the back-and-forth nature of the scrimmage took over.
