When Terri Ten Eyck left the Office of Student Affairs, not only did they lose their financial guru, but they also lost a huge advocate and friend. The national search for a replacement brought in J. Rex Tolliver, who, appropriately enough, was a "Fighting Bengal Tiger" from LSU.
"I was very intrigued by the position because it was similar to what I had at LSU…and this being a new position…I thought it would be a challenge," Tolliver said about deciding to come to ISU. "I was very impressed with Dr. Vailas and some of his press articles about his vision and the new direction he is trying to take the University. It gave the impression that this is an institution that was moving beyond where it was and that excited me."
Tolliver added that he is fully behind President Vailas' fiscal responsibility mission, stating, "Hopefully, others will embrace it."
The Fiscal Officer for the Division of Student Affairs jointly reports to both the Vice President of Student Affairs and the Vice President of Financial Services. Tolliver will be working with all the departments within Student Affairs.
"It is a wonderful position to be in," said Tolliver, "to be on the financial side of Student Affairs. I see my role as one the VP of Student Affairs can rely on for financial advice and forecasting for the department."
A number of the departments under Student Affairs are financially based on student fees and making the most of those budgets will be what Tolliver will be keying in on.
"We will be trying to do the most with what we have," commented Tolliver. "It is important for individual departments to be fiscally responsible for their budgets."
A graduate of LSU, Tolliver received his Bachelor of Science in Finance and Master of Public Administration degree there. Tolliver said attending LSU and living in the city opened his eyes and provided him exposure to diversity, not only of people, but culturally as well. At LSU, Tolliver held two different positions that gave him the expertise to come to ISU.
