Traveling Angler visits Boise

This week's traveling took me to the Boise area. Although it is the state's capital and the most populated Idaho city, Boise offers the local angler, as well as the Traveling Angler opportunities for good fishing in the heart of the city.
The spot in Boise that is most widely fished is the Boise River. This river supports large populations of trout, including many stocked rainbow trout. It also has one of the best populations of Mountain Whitefish, which are targeted by many local anglers. Depending on the resources available in the year, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game also stocks Steelhead Salmon in the river. Although it may seem unlikely that a river like the Boise River, which winds through our Capital City, would sustain good populations of fish, it does. If you are traveling through the Boise area, do not miss out on your chance to fish this beautiful stream.
The other main fishing opportunity that the Boise area offers is a chance to fish in one of the many stocked ponds. Several of these are located near the river, and each is regularly stocked with rainbow trout throughout the year. Many of these ponds also contain warm-water species such as bluegill, bass and catfish. The majority of these ponds are managed as put and take fisheries (many are specifically managed as Family Fishing Waters), and are a great asset to the fisherman or fisherwoman who wants to teach their children to fish.
Whether you decide to fish the Boise River or one of the many Boise City ponds, you will likely have good luck in your Boise fishing adventure. Whether you catch fish or not a trip to Boise will be a fun family adventure.
