Issue date: 4/18/07 Section: Sports
Idaho State's defense picked off a pair of passes, had four sacks, and allowed just 200 yards of total offense as the defense led the day at the second spring scrimmage. While the offense struggled a bit on the day, they did score five touchdowns, three coming on ISU's goal line situational offense.
The interceptions were recorded by D.J. Clark and Michael Harris, and they came off throws by Russel Hill and Codi Boek. The Bengal defense also had four sacks, one each by Joel Janke, Ash Nyong-Dunham, Villi Akoteu and Micah Cloward. Ryan Phipps led the way with six tackles from his middle linebacker slot.
Offensively, ISU's three quarterbacks combined to go 11-for-23 for 131 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Luke Butler was his usual steady self, going 4-for-7 for 90 yards, including a 40-yard hook up with Peter Richter. Russel Hill was 3-of-9 for 25 yards, throwing a touchdown to Jaron Taylor, and Codi Boek was 4-of-7 for 16 yards with a touchdown to Clint Knickrehm, who scored three on the day.
Knickrehm's other two came on the ground, as he led ISU's rushers with 36 yards on eight carries. The other touchdown came on a 7-yard run by Ken Cornist.
Richter, Edsel Logan, Jon Winn and Jaron Taylor all had two catches each. The Bengals now have a pair of early morning practices on Tuesday and Wednesday before their final practice Friday afternoon in preparation for their Spring Game, which is at 2:00 pm on Saturday inside Holt Arena.
