The Idaho State volleyball team went 2-2 at the University of Utah Spring Tournament on Saturday. The Bengals defeated both Boise State and Westminster before dropping matches to Weber State and Utah Valley State.
Katie Edgson recorded a team-high 36 kills on the day while hitting .204. Ashlyn McDowell was also impressive at the net, notching 32 kills with a .326 hitting percentage.
"Katie and Ashlyn were strong offensive forces for us today," said ISU head coach Mike Welch. "I was very impressed with the attacking load both these talented players were able to carry. Katie, as our sole senior-to-be, took some big swings at clutch times, just what we want to see in a senior. Ashlyn, currently a freshman, was a heavy hitter out of the middle, and was a go-to player."
The Bengals defeated Boise State 2-1 (30-27, 18-30, 15-12). McDowell tallied 11 kills with a .409 hitting mark in the match, while Edgson added 10 kills. Idaho State also defeated Westminster 2-1 (30-25, 33-35, 15-11). McDowell led the Bengals with 10 kills in the win.
"Our line up highlighted four freshmen who are really learning how to make the big plays with consistency."
Idaho State dropped a 1-2 decision to Weber State (17-30, 30-23, 7-15) and fell 0-2 to Utah Valley State (25-30, 33-35). Kolay Mickelsen connected on a team-high six kills against WSU, while Edgson led ISU with 14 kills in the loss to Utah Valley State.
"Our staff felt that every team member performed at a high level during different segments of the tournament," Welch said. "This was our first competition of the spring season, so we were a bit inconsistent at times, but demonstrated our ability to perform well."
Mickelsen helped the Bengals with 21 kills on the day, while Emily Waldron added 23.
Idaho State will continue spring play on April 21 when the Bengals host Salt Lake Community College to Reed Gym. Opening serve is set for 1 p.m.
