Construction and renovation have been common themes for this academic year, and the Pond Student Union Building has recently begun it's own remodeling. This Summer, the two main departments within the SUB in Pocatello are going to be moving to new spaces.
"It's an effort to consolidate staff," said Lowell Richards, Executive Director of Student Unions and ASISU General Manager, "…and that has opened the door to move some departments around."
Associated Students of ISU (ASISU) President Ryan Sargent and President-elect Jennifer Brown helped decide on the moves being made, and gave the 'Okay' from the students to go ahead with the two big moves.
First, the Student Leadership and Involvement Center (SLIC) will be moving down to the first floor of the SUB, next to the Transition Gallery and KISU. For years, the SLIC has been located on the third floor of the SUB over the Early Learning Center (ELC), and most students do not know where it is. The ASISU Program Board, Student Community Service Center, and Student Organization and Greek Life, which all have offices in the SLIC, will be moving to new offices and spaces on the first floor of the SUB.
"The creation of this center will make it so student organizations will have one stop to make to meet all of their needs," said Richards.
According to Sargent, "This will create a one-stop area for students looking to get involved on campus."
With C.W. Hog and the Outdoor Adventure Center right around the corner, Program Board Advisor Jason Schlegel said he is excited about the traffic and visibility of the services the first floor will provide for the students.
The Resource Diversity Center will be moving up into the old SLIC office, according to Richards, and there will be the opportunity for expansion of those services as well.
Second, there will be the creation of the new ASISU Suite, located down the hall from the Information Desk. Richards' office, as General Manager of ASISU, will remain, and J. Rex Tolliver, the new Fiscal Officer for the Division of Student Affairs, will also have an office in the Suite.
"There will be meeting rooms and offices for the different ASISU committees like the Election Board and Supreme Court to hold meetings, where they have not had a place to call their own before," added Sargent.
As a part of this move, The Bengal Newspaper offices will move into part of the existing ASISU Offices, and the Scheduling and Maintenance offices for the SUB will occupy the rest.
"We are consolidating three service areas into two, and saving about $160,000 a year in staff costs," commented Richards. The moves will cost about $150,000, which they received from the facilities fee fund.
"These moves will be great for giving more support to students and student leaders, and also provide the visibility and space that these areas deserve," said Sargent.
