After the ceremony, there will be a reception on the floor of ASISU Holt Arena, with "…tables set up with food, punch, and cookies," according to Franz. "…People come down from the stands to mingle with the graduates and take pictures in front of backgrounds, with friends and pictures."
Franz said one of the best parts of commencement is seeing the interaction between faculty and students at graduation, and seeing students move on to a new part of their lives.
Students need to keep in mind that just because a student has applied and may participate in the commencement ceremony, doesn't mean that they have graduated. According to Franz, there are some students every year who don't complete the last class they need, or get a grade suitable for graduation.
Franz also said that it is important to apply for graduation on time. Some students wait until it is too late to apply, and will have to wait for the Summer Commencement to graduate and walk if they want to.
There is a small fact that most students can overlook easily when it comes to graduation. The Graduation Specialists in the office of Registration and Records said that graduates need to remember that the Diplomas will not be sent out until the end of July. Any changes in address need to be done with the Office of Registration and Records. Any address changes done with any other department on campus will not change the addresses on file for shipment of the diplomas.
This will be ISU President Arthur C. Vailas' first spring commencement, and a chance for him to see a traditional graduation ceremony at ISU. Starting this summer, the university will be looking at possible changes in future commencement ceremonies. For now, everyone should look forward to the traditionally great time on May 12.
