As the semester draws to a close, some students are registering for classes this fall, while others are worried about what they are going to do this summer to make sure they can return in the fall. For some, especially non-traditional students, college is their life, as they raise families, work and reach for the degree. Then there are those who see the light at the end of the tunnel. Spring Graduation will be held May 12, in the ASISU Holt Arena (its official title).

This year, 1,932 students will be receiving 2,010 degrees and/or certificates at the Spring 2007 Commencement Ceremony. Looking at the breakdown of students graduating (see Commencement sidebar), some things can be seen that normally wouldn't be at the average university. For example, the age range of those graduating ranges from 19 to 90 years old.

According to Dr. Alan Franz, the Interim Registrar, this year's commencement will be business as usual for ISU.

"[Commencement] should run about two and a half hours, starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12… a lot of people start showing up around 1p.m.," said Franz. "There will be lots of children in the stands, especially at this university, and it is always fun to hear 'Way to go Mom or Dad!' or 'Way to go Grandma!' coming from the stands."

Franz said that we should expect about 800 students to walk during the commencement ceremony. When asked why so few would actually walk, Franz mentioned a number of reasons.

"For some people, they are leaving town as quickly as they can get out for things like summer work…and it basically depends on how important ceremonies are to the students," said Franz.

He also indicated that commencement will be a time for many students to hear various University musical performances. The University Concert Choir will be singing the "The Star-Spangled Banner," accompanied by the University Wind Ensemble. ISU student Brittany Ann Winberg will be singing the "Alma Mater Hymn," accompanied by another student, Abbi Clark.
